Camera filenames tell you nothing

DJI_0472.MP4. C0031.MP4. IMG_4815.MOV. A shooting day leaves you with a few hundred of these, and not one of them says what is in the clip. Finding the one shot of the pyramid at sunrise means opening files one after another until you hit it. The naming is the reason footage sits untouched on drives.

What Cliptag reads out of a clip

Cliptag takes still frames spread across the clip and recognizes what can be seen: the subject, the location, and whether someone is speaking to the camera. Out of that it builds a title, a scene and a handful of tags. Technical details such as resolution, frame rate and aspect ratio come from the file itself and can be appended to the name, which is how you tell a vertical 60fps clip from a horizontal one at a glance.

A name you can search

The result is a filename you can actually find things with, because it contains words you would search for. It stays a normal file on your drive, readable by every editing program, with no database and no proprietary format in between. Your original file is never modified, and the online demo does not touch it at all: the renamed copy is written by your browser.

What the demo does and what the app does

This page takes one clip. Cliptag on your Mac takes the whole card, names and tags every clip, sorts them into scene folders and writes the tags as Finder labels so you can filter them in macOS. It also has a local mode that runs entirely on your Mac, which is the right choice for material that should not go online at all.

FAQ
Is my video uploaded?

In most cases no. Your browser reads the still frames and the audio track itself, and only those go to our server, never the video file. If your browser cannot decode the format, we transfer as little as possible, and for a few exotic formats the file itself. The page tells you which of these is happening before it starts.

Which formats work?

MP4 and MOV with H.264 or HEVC work directly in the browser, which covers phones and most cameras. 10-bit HEVC from drones and ProRes are read on our server because browsers cannot decode them. Camera RAW formats such as BRAW, R3D and ARRIRAW are not supported.

Does this cost anything, or need an account?

No. The online tools are free and there is nothing to sign up for. The Mac app has a free plan too, with 25 cloud clips a month and an unlimited local mode.

Can I rename a whole folder?

Not on this page, it takes one clip at a time. Renaming entire folders, sorting into scene folders and writing Finder tags is what the Mac app does.

Does it change my original file?

No. The demo never writes to your file. The download you get is a copy under the new name, created by your browser; your original stays exactly where it was.
